Cable network HBO has acquired the rights to run a half-hour drama series based on the lives of fictional indie games developers.
The series, which has not yet been greenlit for production, is inspired by an upcoming documentary called Indie Game, which recently premiered at the Sundance.
The documentary follows games designers who, when refusing to work for the major games studios, build their own projects in the hope they’ll create an Angry Birds-sized hit.
Scott Rudin – producer of The Social Network and Moneyball – is to manage the TV show “as a fictional half-hour comedy series for HBO”, according to film industry publication Deadline.
However, the makers of Indie Game The Film say the HBO series will not be a comedy.
“The people involved, the network involved – all are, by far, the best people possible to make this show," read a Facebook post by Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky.
"We are ecstatic about the possibilities of working with this team. All you need to do is look at the list of HBO series titles & Scott Rudin’s IMDB and you can see why we think this is a brilliant thing. We want to see this show happen. We want to watch this show.
