While CEO Phil Rogers suggests future episodic game plans

Square Enix: DLC is â??a mustâ?? for our games

Digital content is now “a massive part of” Square Enix Europe’s remit, says the group’s CEO Phil Rogers.

In an interview with Develop, the publishing boss said his company has turned a new leaf in regards to online strategies.

“How we offer content to consumers via digital download is very important to us,” he said, “and premium downloadable content is an absolute must for the titles that we launch.”

Part of this renewed strategy was outlined last month with the reveal of an upcoming edition of Tomb Raider – called Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light – which will be delivered as a DLC game only.

“I think the new Lara Croft game is a testament to our strategy to try something new,” said Rogers, “not as an experiment in a hit or miss way, but actually as a way to meet new consumer demand.”

And Rogers went on to claim that future Square Enix Europe games would likely come as episodic content.

“Will we see our games split into episodes? It’s not something that we are particularly planning, but I’ve no doubt that we will be over the next three years,” he said.

Elsewhere I the broad-ranging interview with Develop – where Rogers explained the reason for the Tomb Raider name change – Rogers also touched on the group’s broader platform strategy.

“It’s going to be great to deliver games across all these different platforms, and we will be looking at them all, from PSP to PlayStation to mobile,” he said.
