Game’s backers now able to access Alpha 2.0 version of space exploration blockbuster

Star Citizen crowdfunding surpasses $100m

The inevitable has happened: Star Citizen has now raised more than $100m through crowdfunding.

According to the game’s Funding Goals page, more than 1m backers have pledged towards the game since Cloud Imperium Games began raising money three years ago.

More than $30m has been raised in 2015 alone, much of which has been generated by the sale of virtual goods such as in-game ships.

Despite abandoning stretch goals after reaching $65m, the studio has continued to allow players to donate towards the game’s development and there seem to be no signs of closing the crowdfunding page.

Cloud Imperium has now released Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 to backers, which founder Chris Roberts describes as “the first true slice of gameplay”. This build of the game features new ships, new flight modes, first-person battles and more – and Cloud Imperium promises to continue developing Alpha 2.0 in the run-up to the game’s full release next year.

Develop recently interviewed Roberts about Star Citizen and its seemingly unstoppable crowdfunding push. You can read the full interview here.
