Chris Roberts' crowd-funded space exploration title generates $99 per backer

Star Citizen funding passes $40m

You could be forgiven if ‘Star Citizen reaches $XXm’ stories are starting to lose your interest, but the game’s latest milestone is undeniably a head-turner.

The space exploration and combat title has now raised more than $40m, proving that there really is no limit to how much people are willing to pay towards a game’s development.

The $40m has been crowd-funded – first through Kickstarter and then via donations through the Star Citizen website – by an impressive 405,289 backers, with an average donation of $99 per person, according to DualShockers.

As usual, developer Cloud Imperium Games has promised to add new solar systems and other features to the game now that funding has reached this latest milestone. The next stretch goal will be awarded at $42m.

On the game’s website, game creator Chris Roberts wrote: "$40m would have been an impossible dream at the start of the game’s development. I’m constantly amazed by the continued support we receive and how this community manages to grow every day.

"Some say that space sims are niche. I’m not so sure."
