Valve reveals more details about its upcoming devs-only event

Steam Developer Days talks include Oculus VR, Unity, and chip makers

Valve has revealed the first group of third-party speakers to host sessions at its upcoming Steam Developer Days, including Oculus VR, Unity, and a trio of chip manufacturers.

The Half-Life developer is preparing to launch its new line of third-party produced PCs designed to make it easier to play in the living room without a traditional closed-platform console.

The five companies named are Oculus VR, Unity, AMD, Intel, and Nvidia, and based on what we know about the event, it’s likely they’ll be explaining the role their tech will play in Valve’s invasion of the living room.

The Steam developer days have been planned as a devs-only educational forum to inform those who most need to know about Valve’s vision for the revitalised PC platform.

Valve’s new Linux-based operating system and accompanying line of hardware represent a major challenge to the established roster of PC games developers, and those that want to take advantage of the new tech will have to make themselves comfortable with the woefully inadequate tools available to Linux games designers.

The devs-only event will show off some of the new tools being rolled out to tackle this problem, inform developers of the benefits of porting games to a Linux OS, and familiarize them with the new features Steam Machines will bring to the PC space.

It’s also a chance to get hands-on experience with the new Steam controller and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the new input device.

For a full list of topics, including an intro to Linux tools and debugging, Steam Machines, the Steam Controller, and Valve’s plans for virtual reality, visit the event’s official website.

The developer’s days will take place between January 15th and 16th of the coming year at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
