Keighley fingers 2014 No Man's Sky trailer as example of inaccurate footage

The Game Awards reveals to deliver more gameplay, less CGI

The 2016 Game Awards Show is going to be showing world exclusive footage of gameplay footage and announcements from forthcoming titles, although in an interview, boss Geoff Keighley said that he’s looking to ensure these presentations are more honest about what they’re showing.

In the interview, which you can read on Polygon, Keighley singled out the 2014 trailer of No Man’s Sky as a prime example of inaccurate footage. This trailer has already been singled out online in the wake of the game’s mixed release in August this year as an example of the difference in quality to the finished game.

"I have thought about the story of No Man’s Sky a lot," said Keighley. "Did we create this black hole of hype that the developers couldn’t pull themselves out of? Some of that was authored by me. There is a good moral of that story and it’s part of what I’m trying to address this year; to have developers be more transparent about the state of their game."

Not much is known about what will be shown at the ceremony on December 1st with the only premiere the industry has advanced knowledge of is the hotly anticipated Mass Effect Andromeda.

Keighley was keen to point out that the problems with hype and early footage aren’t just relevant to the games industry: "The nature of showing anything in advance is challenging and it’s a game of expectations," he said. "When Warner Bros showed the first Suicide Squad, everyone went crazy and the movie ended up being kind of not that great."
