Rapid2D is the youngest engine in our round-up, having launched just four months ago. It is specifically designed for the production of games and apps for Windows 8.

Code is produced in C++, while the engine’s UI makes it easy to use for both novice and experienced developers.

It’s capable of generating a whole Visual Studio project, with classes for any objects required, thereby speeding up the development time; and all this while allowing multiple developers to work on the same project.

Pro and intermediate versions are due out in the first quarter of 2013, with development facilities for Windows Phone, a microtransaction system, as well as other features.

“Users are increasingly playing more casual games, and therefore the market for development of these games, which are inherently 2D, has increased,” explains Rapid2D lead programmer David Fletcher.

“Developers need to find different ways of generating income; doing this via microtransactions can be very profitable, and is an avenue which developers are increasingly looking to.”

Fletcher adds that Rapid2D will continue to work with Microsoft and is looking to achieve the very best integration with new developments.
