New benchmarking mode and updated visuals added in latest version

UE3 tech demo Epic Citadel gets Android release

Epic Games has released its free technical demonstration of Unreal Engine 3 on Google’s Android operating system.

A new benchmarking mode and updated visuals have been added giving users more to experience in this version of the app.

In addition to this Andriod announcement, Epic has also released an update for the app on iOS, which now available for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The tech demo first appeared on iOS in 2010.

In Epic Citadel, players navigate the dynamic fantasy setting of the award-winning smartphone game, Infinity Blade. Users can wander between the circus bazaar, the sweeping cathedral, among other elements in a medieval township.

“While we’ve licensed our engine to help developers build and ship many fantastic games for Android, Epic Citadel is our first internally developed product to be released to Android users,” said Jay Wilbur, vice president of Epic Games.

“It’s a free, easy way to check out the high-quality experience Unreal Engine technology delivers on mobile devices.”

Epic Citadel was built with the same UE3 tools and technologies used to develop PC, console and mobile games.

Benchmarking mode enables users to gather performance data for Android devices, which displays frames per second stats, quality settings and resolution details.

Epic said that the new version of Epic Citadel features environment mapping and other high-end rendering techniques to produce lifelike reflections, as well as new vertex deformation and skeletal animation bringing trees and banners to life with dynamic movements.

The tools maker has worked with hardware partners including Nvidia, Intel and Imagination Technologies to ensure the Android version performs at its best.
