UPDATED: Epic Games developing new, unannounced IP

Former Gears of War developer Epic Games is working on a new game and intellectual property, the studio has revealed.

Polygon reports lead animator Jay Hosfelt touched on the upcoming project during the Animation Bootcamp: Animation Prototyping for Games talk at GDC this week.

While Hosfelt didn’t mention a specific name or release window for the title, the report notes concept art and character models shown during the panel resembled the protagonist of Epic’s 2011 ‘Samaritan’ tech demo – a prof of concept for the 3.5 version of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3.

The model presented this week and the figure in the ‘Samaritan’ demo display the same outfit and weapon. Further, the model was shown with two different heads – matching the transformation of the character in the demo.

No official word as of yet from the newly-independant company, but its apparently plans to make an unspecified announcement” sometime this week.

UPDATE: Polygon has since updated its original post with Epic’s responses to the report:

"We love that people are excited about our unannounced game, but it’s entirely new and has nothing to do with the Samaritan demo," Epic’s Paul Meegan said on Twitter.

PR manager Wes Phillips provided official comment as well:

"The visuals in Jay’s GDC talk represent sample content we give to Unreal Engine 4 licensees. And even though he talked about our protoyping process, there were no visuals in his presentation that represent our unannounced game."
