Company will also unveil Steam Machines with final Steam Controller

Valve’s SteamVR to debut at GDC next week

Steam creator Valve has been teasing big news for next week’s Game Developers Conference, and has now revealed its biggest surprise: a new virtual reality device.

Eurogamer reports that the firm will unveil "a previously unannounced SteamVR hardware system" at GDC 2015, as well as "Steam Machines with the final Steam Controller [and] new living room devices".

Valve promised earlier this year that it will have a larger-than usual presence at GDC, and that Steam Machines will be ‘front and centre’ of its offering – suggesting that the long-awaited devices will support the mysterious SteamVR.

The company also confirmed the oft-redesigned Steam Controller had been finalised back in January. Valve is one of several firms due to unveil the future of OpenGL.

SteamVR was previously an virtual reality option for the system’s Big Picture mode, while Valve released a virtual reality SDK last year.

The firm also showed developers prototypes of a VR headset behind closed doors at its 2014 Steam Dev Days event – something that was cancelled this year in favour of a bigger presence at GDC.

Valve is hosting scheduled VR demos during the GDC Expo from March 4th to 6th. Find out how to get involved here.
