Virtual Heroes gets UE3

Serious games firm Virtual Heroes has entered into a licence with Epic to use Unreal Engine 3 in the development of educational games and learning technologies.

The studio will integrate UE3 into its Advanced Learning Technology platform, which is used to create serious games and simulations that can teach the user through play.

The serious games market is showing considerable growth, with the Washington-based Serious Games Initiative estimating that the market is currently worth $100 million and set to grow to be worth $1 billion within the next decade.

“As an industry leader, we are committed to doing everything we can to advance the serious games market and to spearhead implementation of advanced learning technologies,” said Jerry Heneghan, Virtual Heroes founder and CEO.

“This partnership is yet another opportunity for us to help improve the quality, realism and effectiveness of those applications.”

Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games added: “Virtual Heroes has the opportunity to become the market leader in the development of advanced learning technology solutions.

“We understand the tremendous market opportunity offered by this new genre of serious games and are excited about how VHI can accelerate growth in this market segment using Unreal Engine 3.”
