UPDATE: Official announcement made, TT Games at the helm

Warner Bros enters the toys-to-life market with LEGO Dimensions

Warner Bros will join Activision, Disney and Nintendo in the toys-to-life sector with a new LEGO-themed franchise.

Leaked images and details of LEGO Dimensions suggest the game will be similar to the likes of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, with players using a near-field communication portal – in this case, a LEGO Toy Pad – to introduce characters and vehicles into the game.

There’s no word on who is developing the game yet. The vast majority of LEGO games are developed by UK studio TT Games, but with that team hard at work on LEGO Jurassic World, it’s likely another dev has been dedicated to this new franchise.

The info first appeared on Reddit, spotted by Videogamer, and shows the starter pack will come with the Toy Pad, three figures – Batman, Gandalf and The Lego Movie’s Wyldstyle – and a Batmobile.

DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings and The Lego Movie are just some of the familiar properties expected to appear under the LEGO Dimensions umbrella, with nods in the leaked press relase to LEGO’s Ninjago series and the Back to the Future movies.

An official announcement, detailing platforms, release date and more, is expected later today.

UPDATE: Warner Bros has officially announced LEGO Dimensions will be released on September 29th, 2015.

The game is being developed at TT Games and will be available for Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The first wave of expansion packs include characters from DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago and Back to the Future, with more to be announced.
