The Assassin’s Creed franchise will introduce its first transgender character when Syndicate arrives later this year.

One of the main contacts for the title’s heroes will be a trans male named Ned Wynert, according to Eurogamer. It’s a significant step towards inclusivity.

The previous Assassin’s Creed came under fire for not including a playable female character. Ubisoft has since revealed that Syndicate will have both a male and female playable character in the form of twins Jacob and Evie Fry, although Jacob remains the principle protagonist.

In addition to the revelation of Wynert, the series’ famous opening statement has also been expanded to further demonstrate the team’s diversity.

“Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities,” the text now reads.

Creative director Marc-Alexis Côté said: “Inclusiveness is something that’s super important for us as a team. We’ve made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game.”
