Tool suite available at no cost to developers with game budgets under $100,000

Audio middleware FMOD Studio goes free for indies

Firelight’s audio middleware FMOD Studio is now available completely free for indie developers.

The offer is specifically open to developers making games with a budget equivalent to or under $100,000.

Previously those licensing the tool suite with a similar budget were required to pay $500 per title to use FMOD.

For budgets over $500,000, FMOD Studio licensing can cost up to $15,000.

"We started out as an indie company so we’ve always felt an affinity with the indie community," said Firelight Technologies CEO Brett Paterson.

"They’re risk takers, innovators and explorers. We wanted to give back to that community and we can’t wait to see what they do with FMOD Studio."

Firelight recently released version 1.3 of the audio tool suite, adding a Unity integration plug-in and a plug-in SDK for creating sound generators and effects, with examples available on GitHub.

FMOD Studio was recently used in Xbox One launch title Forza 5. You can read our profile on how the tool suite powered the racing game’s audio here.
