Immersion's development kits available for Kinect and smartphones; No fee for non-commercial use

Augmented reality SDK goes free

Total Immersion has released a new free-to-use version of its augmented reality SDK, called D’Fusion Studio.

Version 3.2 includes face tracking, image and script assets and improves computer vision capabilities.

The AR platform can be used to create games and applications for platforms including iOS, Android, web and Kinect.

“D’Fusion software is the AR solution that we have been working on for more than ten years,” said Immersion CEO Bruno Uzzan.

“We are now launching it for a huge community so everybody can make augmented reality applications simply and efficiently.”

The SDK uses C++, but Uzzan said the language used is easier to read as there is a complete graphic user interface and a high level library of assets so users “don’t need crazy skills” to create games.

Whilst the software is free-to-use for non-commercial purposes, there are fees to activate a developed game and bring it to market, based on the application, individual circumstances and country.

Developers can also purchase D’Fusion Studio Pro, which Immersion said provides access to training, technical support and a 30 per cent discount off publishing fees.

The AR tech outfit has also released free iOS game SkinVaders alongside the SDK to showcase its functionality, which it said, “transforms faces into game terrain over which alien invaders battle for domination”.

D’Fusion Studio was first released in 2001, and initially cost developers more than 30,000 euros plus added publishing costs.
