Bitsquid game engine receives research funding

Government investment to help create tools for producing movies in the development platform

Middleware outfit BitSquid has received research funding to further development if its game engine.

The investment, which comes from the Swedish government agency for Innovation Systems, Vinnova, will go toward the research and development of a tool for producing movies in the Bitsquid engine.

The tech will be designed to offer developers camera positioning, cutting, animation, lighting and a number of other techniques.

Bitsquid was one of 30 companies out of 302 applicants to receive the funding.

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Bitsquid was formed in 2009. The game engine has been built to focus on performance, flexibility and productivity, and its creator states it features a lean code base (estimated 10x smaller, fast workflows and sub-second iteration on multiple devices simultaneously.

Games to have harnessed the engine include Fatshark-developed War of the Roses (pictured) and Hamilton. Bitsquid also recently announced that the middleware was available to license for PS4 development.
