BlitWorks: 'PS4 dev tools yet to catch up with Vita'

Studio behind Fez, Spelunky and Bastion ports reveals future projects for handheld platform

Vita-focused studio BlitWorks has claimed that the handheld currently boasts better utilities for devs than its home console sibling, the PS4.

The outlet has brought several big-label indie titles across to Sony’s portable system, including Spelunky, Fez, Bastion and Super Meat Boy.

Asked the benefits of coding for the divisive platform, PR manager Geraldine Abuliak told The Vita Lounge that ensuring games run at their full capacity was much easier than on PS4.

“As developers, we have really incredible tools for debugging and analysing performance,” she said.

“They’re even better than the ones we currently have for PS4 – although they’re quickly catching up.

“Actually, without those amazing tools it would have been impossible to get so much out of the hardware.”

This particularly helps to counteract the Vita’s biggest drawback, Abuliak added.

“The number one difficulty is having to deal with the performance of a mobile platform,” she explained. “All the titles we’ve worked with were developed for much more powerful platforms.

“When you see the Vita performing like a PS3 or a Xbox 360 it is because there has been a good deal of work optimising the performance for the particularities of the Vita. It’s not so powerful unless the code is carefully adapted.”

Abuliak concluded by revealing that BlitWorks has further Vita releases planned for the future – insisting that the platform still has plenty of potential.

“We have a few Vita projects on the pipeline, but we can never reveal them,” she teased. “This is something publishers choose the right moment to do.

“But there are really good games that are still missing on the Vita, and they fit really well in the platform.”
