Frontier boss keynote booked; Develop launches Dare to be Digital profiles

Braben to open Dare ProtoPlay

Frontier Developments boss David Braben will open this year’s Dare ProtoPlay games festival, the event’s organiser has said.

Braben will open the show with a talk on the genesis of the seminal space trading game Elite, as well as discuss the challenges and benefits of being a modern independent games studio.

Dare ProtoPlay is the last phase of the renowned student game design competition, Dare to be Digital. Prior to the event, 15 student teams have been building game prototypes as part of Abertay University’s games design course.

Those prototypes will be to the mercy of the public for the first time at ProtoPlay. The winning three teams will be nominated for a BAFTA Ones to Watch award.

Develop will be running profiles on each of the fifteen contestant teams, found here.

“I have always been impressed by the standard of the Dare to be Digital games,” Braben said.

“I presented the BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ Award to the Dare winning team in 2009. Now I am delighted to have the first chance to look at this year’s Dare games and share my experience with other developers at Dare ProtoPlay.”
