Resident Evil maker sees increase in income, despite poor response to its lead franchise

Capcom profits rise, despite lukewarm response to RE6

Capcom profits increased to 44.6 per cent in the nine months since the end of March 2012, despite poor sales of its latest Resident Evil title.

Net sales for the period ending December 31st, 2012 climbed to 72,699m Yen (44.6 per cent), while operating income jumped to 9,838m Yen (45.9 per cent).

Ordinary income was up 72.6 per cent to 10,054m Yen, while net income rose to 104.9 per cent to 6,645m Yen, compared to the same term last year.

Capcom’s biggest 2012 title, Resident Evil 6, saw sales of over 4.8m for the period.

However the publisher admitted that it was not pleased with the game’s performance: “Despite recording brisk sales when it debuted, subsequently lost its momentum, resulting in the failure to achieve planned sales and fulfil its role as a driver of sales expansion.”

This letdown was offset by the somewhat surprise success of RPG Dragon’s Dogma, which “enjoyed popularity exceeding expectations in the more profitable domestic market, becoming a million-seller unprecedented among recent new brand games developed and published by the company”.

Capcom added that it’s first Wii U title, Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G HD, now has 7.2m registered social game members in Japan and has enjoyed steady growth in its home market.

The Japanese publisher’s arcade operation saw a decline in net sales by 8,198m Yen (6.9 per cent), with operating income was down by 1,271m Yen (14.7 per cent). The publisher closed three unprofitable arcades, leaving it with 34 remaining by the end of the period. “Due the lack of sales-driving products and our inability to avoid the backlash of increase in demand after the Great East Japan Earthquake, sales remained weak,” it statement read.
