New indie mobile and handheld studio open for business

Codemasters and Rare veterans launch Pixel Toys

A new mobile and handheld studio Pixel Toys has arrived on the scene in Warwick.

Pixel Toys founders Alex Zoro and Andrew Wafer have promised to bring their experience at Codemasters, Activision, and Rare into play in building cutting-edge games.

Wafer worked as a chief game desienger at Codemasters, later moving into brand and creative management.

He worked on dozens of titles including Prisoner of War, Overlord and the original Operation Flashpoint.

Zoro began as a programmer at Rare, where he worked on both Perfect Dark titles.

He later left to co-found FreeStyleGames, which was acquired by Activision, and was technical lead for the DJ Hero games.

“After finishing DJ 2 I felt the timing was right for a change; and seeing the potential of smartphones and tablets it was clear to me that there’s a huge opportunity to create completely new and unique products tailored to the platform,” said Zoro.

With massive growth in hardware and tablet sales, the pair decided it was time to get on board.

“We’ve seen explosive global growth in sales of smartphone and tablets, hardware which is capable of delivering graphically rich experiences and is getting significantly more powerful with each iteration," said Wafer.

"We believe the time is right for us, the technology is there, the audience is there”.

The studio has two projects in development for handheld, mobile and tablet platforms, and is currently hiring.

“We will make beautiful, engaging entertainment experiences that consistently surprise and delight," said Zoro.

"It’s not enough just to make games, I know from experience you have to make the very best games in that genre or space to be successful. We’ve got open positions on the team and want to hear from anyone who shares that mind-set.”
