Slick is a 2.5D platformer with a taste for speed. The player takes control of Slick, a socially outcast snail who was kicked from his village for his hereditary over-production of slime.
In order to keep his problem under control, Slick has to be constantly on the move, avoiding obstacles at break-neck speeds.
We hope the game will appeal to all ages with its silly setting, slimy snail and slick speed.
When we were accepted into the competition, I was suddenly rather scared; we were going to be scrutinised night and day and our lack of experience in games development would show straight away.
I’m glad to say that my fears were completely unfounded, as Dare’s approach has been encouraging, collaborative and nurturing.
We have been given the chance to dip our toes in the water before taking the plunge into a real working environment, and the support that has been offered has really helped in preparing us to the best of our abilities.
With 15 teams participating, it has been a fierce battle, but all of the teams get along well and really help each other out while still maintaining the spirit of the competition, which is a really rewarding balance that the whole Dare experience at Abertay University has helped to create.
Dare has been an extremely positive experience for our whole team, allowing us to really begin to understand the difficult processes behind games development and get to grips with the inner workings of a productive team.
Personally, the biggest thing I have learned is how to work with people with different skill sets than I, not just programmers!
Another key element of Dare is that of the mentors. The tailored advice received from grizzled veterans of the industry has resulted in a lot of improvements to our game, and a general insight into the way real developers get things done.
Nervous anticipation probably best describes how our team feels about ProtoPlay, in fact, that’s quite the understatement; we’re terrified of how our game will be received by the public!
Despite that, however, getting to ProtoPlay has been our driving force from the get-go and I think we’ll really enjoy getting to show off our baby to the world.
We’ve been given a giant stepping stone with Dare and we intend to use that to its fullest. Although we have a couple of team members who still have another year of university, we will be jumping at any opportunity to prolong working together.
The results of ProtoPlay will obviously have a great effect on any plans to continue making Slick, but with an increasingly accessible market out there, we’re optimistic about our chances!
