What's your game?
Don't Walk: RUN! is a 2-4 player local multiplayer game, that utilises second screen technology in an entirely new way. Three players take the role of hapless tourists, trapped in a chaotic and bombastic situation inspired by the best/worst B-movies of all time.
The final player uses the second screen to become the movie's director, and interact directly with the game's environment – throwing cars, setting up traps, redirecting traffic, huge explosions, earthquakes – all of this is controlled in real time and with pinpoint accuracy using an iPad's touchscreen.
These two play styles exist in harmony and come together to create a unique interactive experience geared towards emergent gameplay unique to every group of players!
What has the Dare experience been like?
Hectic! With development time effectively being around seven weeks, the competition is absolutely one of the toughest challenges we've ever faced as game developers – and its one we have enjoyed immensely.
What have you learned from Dare?
How to work as a team, how to overcome extremely tight deadlines, the importance of planning – the list is endless. I think, most of all, we've learned exactly what we're capable of achieving and how to apply our various strengths and skills for maximum effectiveness. It’s a pretty good feeling!
Are you looking forward to ProtoPlay?
We're looking forward to it a lot – it’s going to be really exciting getting this new experience into the hands of thousands of game fans! It’s also another chance for us to don our Hawaiian shirts, which is kind of our team's signature look, so it’s doubly exciting!
What are your ambitions after Dare?
We're extremely proud of the new game experience we've built in such a short amount of time, and we would love to have the opportunity to polish and expand on the prototype. The game lends itself extremely well to a variety of exciting platforms – including Wii U, Xbox One and Smartglass, and PS4 and Vita – so we'd really like to explore those opportunities.
Apart from that, we're going to keep doing what we love – making games!
Dare ProtoPlay and Indie Fest is on 7th-10th August in Dundee’s Caird Hall and City Square, with all 15 Dare student games on show, as well as over 30 indie games. http://www.dareprotoplay.com/
