The man behind some of the most iconic PC games of the 1990s is to work on a follow-up to one of his most influential projects.

Designer Warren Spector helped craft franchises including Wing Commander, Thief and, most notably, Deus Ex.

He also served as the producer of System Shock, the sci-fi RPG that went on to inspire BioShock, as well as the original Deus Ex.

Since 2013, Spector has been overseeing the University of Texas’ development-focused Gaming Academy, while simultaneously acting as an advisor for reboot specialist OtherSide Entertainment’s revival of the Ultima Underworld series, Underworld Ascendant.

Now, he will move away from his role in education to return to full-time development, working on OtherSide’s follow-up to one of the franchises he helped to create nearly two decades ago: System Shock 3.

Spector previously worked alongside OtherSide founder Paul Neurath on System Shock, with Neurath having co-founded the game’s developer Looking Glass Technologies.

"When the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21st century audience, I just couldn’t say no," Spector said.

"Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my career and it’s hard to describe how much I’m looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released."
