Previously we looked at how studios in Canada fared in the latest Develop 100, with ten developers featuring in the list garnering an impressive £223.54m in UK retail revenue during 2011.
Over the coming weeks Develop will be publishing extracts and highlight data from the book, which uses GfK Chart-Track research on retail sales to formulate a ranking based on UK revenues.
Today we examine how publishing giant Ubisoft performed, with four of its development studios featured in the Develop 100 list.
Unsurprisingly, Ubisoft’s 2,000-strong mega-studio in Montreal was the publisher’s most profitable branch generating £49.63m in UK retail revenue thanks to its Assassin’s Creed series, giving it a place at number six in the rankings.
This was followed closely behind by Ubisoft’s France studios, which earnt much of their money from the hit Just Dance series. Ubisoft Casablanca and Reflections rounded up the publisher’s presence in the Develop 100.
Much of the glory however, particularly from the Montreal branch, can be shared with other studios in the Ubisoft empire, although we don’t split the revenue here given the way these teams are treated like close outsourcing partners.
In fact, that global scale has become a point of pride. Montreal was announced as leading the production of this year’s Assassin’s Creed III, but Ubisoft has given credit to six other teams including its bases in Annecy, Sweden, Singapore, Quebec and Kiev.
