For any readers who might not know you, tell us a little more about your company and its goals.

Epic is best known for Unreal Engine technology, which powers hundreds of games including Epic-created franchises including Unreal Tournament, Gears of War, Infinity Blade and Fortnite. Headquartered in Cary, North Carolina with studios worldwide we are an independent game and technology developer. Our goal is to build great games and make our latest engine, UE4, available to everyone who has an interest in the art of making games.

What differentiates you from similar outfits? What’s unique about you?

Epic has a unique culture of personal responsibility. Everyone in the company, from top to bottom, is engaged in building the best possible technology, games and community. Our founder and CEO Tim Sweeney is often seen on the Unreal Engine forums and our AnswerHub answering questions, and this is a great example of the way Epic operates, with everyone focused on driving the products forward in cooperation with the community.

What excites and/or encourages you about the games industry and games development today?

The industry’s barrier to entry has once again been lowered, with better tools and digital paths to market making it easier for anyone to get involved. Access to games development across many platforms utilising a variety of distribution routes means we are enjoying an unparalleled resurgence in creativity, with numerous styles and genres to suit every type of player.

Regarding the Develop Awards finalists, what does it say to you about the industry and development today?

The list is clear evidence of an industry that has renewed confidence in itself and its place as a legitimate entertainment arts medium.
