In the first of a number of Develop Awards profiles of the companies backing our Awards, we speak to Pitbull Studio MD Robert Troughton about his company, its work and his message for the finalists.

Could you introduce your company to our readers who might not know Pitbull Studio?
Pitbull Studio is a development studio with a strong history of working with, and on, Unreal Engine. The majority of their work has been helping Epic Games create the astounding Unreal Engine 4, as well as supporting them on several of their games, including the recent Gears of War: Judgment. Pitbull are available for both programming and artistic work.
What distinguishes your studio from similar outfits? In other words, what’s unique about Pitbull?
We truly are specialists with Unreal Engine. No other independent studio in Europe is working so closely and in such a large capacity with Epic Games and Unreal Engine. By working on technology for all platforms – from mobile, through PC, and up to the next generation and experimental platforms, we’re not exposed to the risks that other studios are currently suffering from… our chips are evenly spread across the whole roulette table, you could say.
What excites and encourages you about the games industry today?
It’s fantastic to see hardware branching out in so many directions. For years, people have been talking about convergence – when actually, the opposite happened. That’s creating a lot of new opportunities, it’s forcing many studios to be more agile with their development, it’s causing a lot of confusion over what the future holds. To be a part of all of that is definitely exciting.
Looking at the Develop Awards finalists, what does it say to you about today’s games industry?
I think it’s fantastic to see so many relatively new names on there, so many new and original titles, so much innovation and creativity. I hope that continues as new platforms release – with new IP supplementing the staple IP that we all love.
Do you have a message for the Develop Awards finalists?
Good luck to everyone. And, if you don’t win, stay classy – there are so many good names on there, I think there are going to be a lot of heated arguments to decide who should win each trophy. There are many, many great studios, games and people that didn’t even make it to the nominations this year – including Pitbull – so you should feel proud that you’re there.
Was there anything else you wanted to say about your company or the Develop Awards?
We’re always hiring.
