Star Wars will be the face of this year’s Hour of Code tutorial, the global initiative that aims to educate children about coding.

The partnership between Hour of Code organisers Code.org and Disney will see characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens starring in online games that kids will be able to animate, according to Recode.

Children will be able to drag and drop part of codes to form programs that will move cartoon versions of lead character Rey and already popular droid BB-8, as well as some old favourites such as Princess Leia, R2-D2 and C-3PO.

The games have been designed to teach children how computer programming works and are expected to be used by millions of students.

Code.org co-founder Hadi Partovi said: “People’s preconceptions around code is that it’s this boring, geeky thing that has nothing to do with anything you care about. We want to make it more fun, cool and hip.”
