Publisher continues restructuring to 'priority growth areas'

EA shuts down Phenomic

EA has closed down SpellForce and Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances developer Phenomic.

A “number of sources” with knowledge of the studio have told GamesIndustry International of the closure, although the publishing giant has refused to confirm the report.

EA has said however this does not mean it is stepping away from the free-to-play genre, despite having also shut down EA Playfish in recent months.

"As part of EA’s realignment in recent weeks, we have announced internally a small adjustment to some development staff to better focus our teams against priority growth areas,” read a statement from EA.

“The decision to let people go is not something we take lightly and we are working to ensure that impacted employees are treated fairly and with respect for their contributions to EA, and with assistance to find other job opportunities.

"These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.”

Based in Germany, Phenomic was founded in 1997 and later acquired by EA in 2006. The studio created a number of games including SpellForce and SpellForce 2, Battleforge, Lord of Ultima and most recently Command and Conquer: Tiberium Alliances.
