Epic Games is launching a new virtual reality competition with the Wellcome Trust that will explore how the technology could be used to aid researchers.
The Big Data VR Challenge tasks participants with creating an innovative way for VR users to explore large data sets in order to identify trends and connections. Think Minority Report’s Tom Cruise sifting through data, or Tony Stark rearranging holographic objects and reports.
The organisers are calling on games developers to take part, given their experience with both huge amounts of data and virtual reality development.
Any team interested in entering needs to email bigdataVR@bastion.co.uk before 12am GMT on Tuesday, March 31st.
Six teams will be chosen from among the applicants and invited to a workshop at the Wellcome Trust’s London HQ next month, where the three research projects for the challenge will be revealed.
Each team will receive $5,000 to cover expenses, with a grand prize of $20,000 awards to the winner.
The winning team will be chosen by a panel of judges and announced at Develop: Brighton 2015 in July.
