Unreal 4 engine license up for grabs to winners

Epic launches Make Something Unreal Live 2013

Epic Games is now taking submissions for its annual development contest Make Something Unreal Live.

Taking place at the Gadget Show Live exhibition in April next year, student developers will be tasked with creating a game around the theme of ‘Mendelian inheritance’ which spans concepts such as variation, mutation and other behaviours in the human genome.

Four teams will be selected after the submission processes ends to iterate on their titles, developed with UDK, on the show floor during the event.

Winners of the competition will receive a commercial license for PC digital distribution for Unreal Engine 4.

The deadline to send in game pitches to enter the show is November 2nd.

“MSUL is a fantastic way of discovering the brightest minds and the best ideas in the student development community,” said Epic Games European territory manager Mike Gamble.

“The competition enables tomorrow’s stars to gain experience in every aspect of game development, from generating original ideas through to the pitch process, right up to a vertical slice of the gameplay experience.”

April’s Make Something Unreal Live contest will be support by human and animal health charity the Wellcome Trust. As part of its support, the organisation will provide teams with resources throughout the competition as well as access to scientists and facilities.

“We’re delighted to be involved with Make Something Unreal Live, and to support and inspire a new generation of games developers,” said Wellcome Trust head of special projects Daniel Glaser.

“The Wellcome Trust is committed to using games and gaming culture as a means of engaging people with science, working to network the talent and knowledge of scientists and developers and offering a range of funding schemes.”

The event will also be supported by Staffordshire University and Ukie, with new prizes in addition to an Unreal Engine 4 license to be announced at a later date.
