Geomerics’ Enlighten tool utilised as lighting solution

Final Fantasy VII Remake being built with Unreal Engine

The upcoming reimagining of Final Fantasy VII is being created using a combination of modern-day software.

Unreal Engine 4 will serve as the foundation of the remake, which is being co-developed by Naruto studio CyberConnect2.

The engine is different to that being used in the next instalment in the storied RPG series, Final Fantasy XV.

Final Fantasy XV will be the first Square Enix title to be built upon the Luminous Engine.

Spin-off sequel Kingdom Hearts III was initially planned to use Luminous, but was switched to Unreal Engine 4 last year for ‘various reasons’.

"We realise how special Final Fantasy VII is to fans, and we place our trust in Unreal Engine 4 technology and tools to help deliver this long-awaited remake, crafted for modern platforms," producer Yoshinori Kitase said in an announcement.

Epic Games Japan’s Taka Kawasaki added: "We’re humbled that Square Enix has chosen Unreal Engine 4 to recreate one of the world’s most beloved video games of all time.

“It is a joy to work with the talented developers behind the franchise, and this marks an unforgettable moment in Unreal Engine history."

The Remake has also been confirmed to use Geomerics’ lighting solution Enlighten.

You can see Unreal and Enlighten in action in the game’s PlayStation Experience trailer below.
