I remember at Mobile World Congress a couple of years ago, Renee James, now President of Intel, said that Intel’s goal was that every platform should run most effectively on Intel hardware. That made sense to me: after all, people buy hardware to run software, so it’s important that the software works as well as possible.
I was reminded of this when I read this report on Intel Developer Zone, highlighting how Intel has been working on improving Android’s performance on Intel Architecture. At Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2013, Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai commended the work Intel has done on optimising the Android stack for performance on Intel.
Pichai noted Intel’s work in particular on the Linux kernel, open source libraries, Dalvik runtime, and the application development environment. Pichai also mentioned Beacon Mountain, which enables you to develop Android applications more quickly, as another important part of the puzzle.
There is work you can do to optimise the performance of your application, but the starting point has to be that the underlying hardware and software platform are working in close partnership, and as optimally as possible. That’s why Intel is one of the largest contributors to the Android project, ensuring that your software can benefit from a performance-optimised platform.
