Team formed by ex-Lionhead devs had raised £59,000 of £250,000 goal before attracting anonymous backer

Flaming Fowl cancels Fable card game Kickstarter after securing investment

Fable Fortune, the card game spin-off to Lionhead’s RPG series developed by former members of the closed studio including Craig Oman, Mike West and Marcus Lyn, has cancelled its Kickstarter.

However, it’s not bad news that heralded the premature finish to Flaming Fowl’s crowdfunding run, as the studio has secured funding from an anonymous backer, allowing it – in combination with its founders’ personal investment – to cover development costs.

“With the immediate future of Fable Fortune now secure, we have taken the decision to end our Kickstarter campaign early to focus on releasing a closed beta build as quickly as possible,” the developer explained on its Kickstarter blog.

“As we’ve always stated, we want to make this game with your help, your feedback and your input. We have huge plans for Fortune and we know that whatever happens in the future, it all started with our already incredible community.”

At the time its Kickstarter closed, Flaming Fowl had raised just shy of £59,000 of its £250,000 funding target, from more than 1,500 supporters.

Fable Fortune is set for release on PC and Xbox One next year, although the latter platform was listed as a Kickstarter stretch goal had the developer gathered £700,000 in pledges.

Microsoft has granted the use of the Fable licence to Flaming Fowl, but will not be the publisher of or an investor in the game.

A Fable card game was originally pitched during the creation of Fable 2, and began production in mid-2014, 18 months before Lionhead’s demise.
