President of Japanese developer adds: ‘Our only option is to make a new Armored Core’

From Software working on three projects, including an RPG, potential reboot and ‘something weird’

Dark Souls creator From Software has revealed that it is currently developing three internal projects, and hinted at what the games may entail.

President Hidetaka Miyazaki told 4gamer (translated by Neogaf) that the first project was an action RPG with a ‘dark fantasy setting’ – but affirmed that the new game would adopt a different approach to the Dark Souls and Bloodborne titles.

The second was suggested as potentially being a reboot of an existing franchise, with Miyazaki also saying this could surface as an original title with ideas and themes taken from a past series.

For the third project, Miyazaki said that From will be exploring a completely new sector or genre, saying it would be ‘something different’ and ‘a bit weird’.

This may well be the previously confirmed game for PlayStation VR, as well as PC, which Miyazaki previously said was a “step in a new direction” for the company.

At the same time, he stated that there was “absolutely no plan right now for any sequels, spin-offs or tie-ins” relating to Dark Souls – ruling out the idea of the first project as being a new Souls game

Potentially throwing more light on the second teased project, Miyazaki said that From had no option but to develop a new Armored Core instalment due to his own attachment to the mech series. The last entry in the franchise was 2013’s Verdict Day for PS3 and Xbox 360.

"Its concept is still charming even now,” he explained. “I think Armored Core can re-sublimate with another interesting, valuable game. And many of our staff want to make a new Armored Core.

“Personally, Armored Core was what started my career, so I am fond of it. Of course, we don’t not make a new Armored Core.”
