Ubisoft Montpellier's Gabrielle Shrager to discuss how to script a rich mythology and back story in games

GDC adds ZombiU and Ghost Recon to narrative summit

Talks looking into the story structures behind titles such as ZombiU, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Spec Ops: The Line have been added to the Game Developers Conference 2013.

Ubisoft Montpellier story design director Gabrielle Shrager and author Anthony Johnston will discuss how to script a rich mythology, back story and narrative using the studio’s own ZombiU title as an example.

The presentation’s description states that attendees will learn “what steps you can take to enhance your game’s narrative depth without making the designers scream, how fiction and genre concepts can positively influence gameplay, and how to use a player’s familiarity with genre tropes to your advantage”.

Red Storm Entertainment and Ghost Recon senior narrative designer Jay Posey meanwhile will discuss the difference between realism and authenticity, the importance of research and the role of entertainment.

Other narrative summit sessions include ‘Method acting and interactive storytelling in Far Cry 3′ by Ubisoft’s Jeffrey Yohalem, Microsoft Game Studios’ Richard Rouse III with seven techniques for writing a moral game and 2K Games’ Walt Williams discussing ‘We are not heroes: Contextualising violence through narrative’.

GDC 2013 will take place between March 25th and 29th at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco.

Develop will be out force at the event to cover all the latest and breaking stories as they happen. The March issue of Develop will also be available throughout the conference.
