Spoon Cloud Gaming offers over 200 titles â??install-freeâ??

GDC11: Spoon cloud gaming launched

US cloud computing firm Spoon have launched a cloud gaming service at GDC in San Francisco today.

Spoon Cloud Gaming is touted as offering over 200 launch titles including Jewel Quest, Farm Frenzy and Second Life via a ‘small browser plugin’.

Spoon has said that its service allows games to be easily embedded into existing websites, blogs and social networks.

“Spoon is excited to bring app virtualisation technology to the gaming community,” said Spoon CEO Kenji Obata.

“Gamers can now enjoy graphically rich desktop games in the cloud without the latency issues associated with other cloud technologies.”

Spoon has described its new platform as using a ‘hybrid of remote and local computing sources’, which it says will reduce bandwidth requirements and keep gameplay uninterrupted.

The firm has also said that its service allows for on and offline play with no installs, and the ability to ‘synchronise game state between devices’, allowing for continual play between desktops.

“We are currently seeing growth in cloud gaming as game developers and publishers look to capitalise on the power of the web to sell and distribute PC games online,” said Parks Associates analyst Laura Allen Phillips.

“Yet until now the options have been limited. Spoon’s technology offers a viable solution by combining high quality, traditional desktop gameplay with the flexibility of cloud based delivery.”
