Get That Job: How to be a data analyst

The game industry is home to a plethora of professions key to making a studio a success.

Each week we’ll shine a light on a specific role, with tips on from those in the know on how to land that job.

This week we have Chris Kelly from Scotland-based independent developer Tag Games offering specialist advice on how to bag a job as a data analyst, and what it takes to be a success in the role.

“Think on your feet: problem-solving skills are a must. You’ll often find that you have to look at the same problem across different games and approach them differently," said Kelly.

“Know your audience: a proven record of presenting to all levels within a company is a valuable asset. The data analysed is only as good as how you present it. Keep in mind who you’re presenting to and don’t overwhelm them with concepts they don’t understand.

“Be passionate about your work: understanding and enjoying games is key. Being able to have the added insight of not only being able to crunch numbers and mine data, but also appreciate how it directly affects things like gameplay is probably the best tool of them all.”
