Motiga, the studio behind free-to-play MOBA, Gigantic, has been closed by parent company Perfect World. The closure, according to a statement sent to Destructoid from the publisher is due to budgets.
"All of Motiga was acquired by Perfect World last year," the statement from CEO Chris Chung read. "Perfect World decided to announce the arrangement as partnership by the directions from corporate for the reason we were not privy to.
"Yes, [closing Motiga] was the corporate decision. It was a budgetary decision at the highest level. Perfect World as a public company has a profitability goal and they decided to cut parts of the company that were not profitable. In short, Gigantic was not making enough revenue. Unfortunately, Motiga is not the only Perfect World studio being impacted by the decision."
Gigantic released in July 2017 following a rather lengthy beta process that started in 2015 and was made using Unreal Engine 3. The game came out for Windows and Xbox One only and, despite positive reviews, appears to have failed to gain a big enough audience. At the time of writing, the game isn't in the top 100 concurrent steam games.
The game, however, is set to continue in the meantime under the stewardship of a smaller team that will address any issues for players. Our thoughts are with the staff affected and we hope everyone finds new work soon.
