Pre-orders begin in January

HoloLens dev kits ship early next year

Microsoft will start shipping dev kits for its augmented reality headset HoloLens during the first quarter of 2016.

It will start accepting applications for pre-orders in January. Each dev kit will cost $3,000, with a limit of two devices per application.

Dev kits will initially only be shipped to the US and Canada. Developers will also need to be a Windows Insider members and agree to provide feedback on the tech to Microsoft.

HoloLens was unveiled in January earlier this year. The tech allows users to interact with holograms in a physical space by using gestures and voice. Holograms can also be pinned to physical locations that can turn rooms into games, the prime example of this being Minecraft.
