Tech helps characters respond naturally to terrain as they explore the game world

IKinema RunTime powering Crackdown 3 animations

Tools provider IKinema has revealed that its RunTime software is being used by the studios behind the upcoming Crackdown 3.

The game was announced at E3 2014, and is expected to arrive later this year – at least, the multiplayer is, with the single-player element to follow. It is currently being developed by Microsoft Studios and Reagent Games, with additional work by Cloudgine and Sumo Digital.

The studios are using IKinema RunTime to power the character animations. The tool procedurally animates both humanoid and multi-limbed models in a way that ensures their traversal around game worlds appears natural.

This has been particularly useful in Crackdown 3, given that the game is said to have a 100 per cent destructible environment.

“By bringing IKinema RunTime technology into our game, it’s enabled our super-powered characters to react believably to dynamically changing environments and props, and has brought the over-the-top fun that’s essential to our overall gaming experience,” said Microsoft Studios’ executive producer Peter Connelly.

We can expect to see more of Crackdown 3 at E3 later this month.
