Pixelmage Games, the studio headed up by John Smedley, has pulled its Kickstarter campaign for debut title Hero’s Song.
The campaign had only been running for one week and was attempting to raise $800,000. After seven days, 3,037 backers had only managed to pledge $136,849 towards this ambitious target.
Smedley recognised it was time to take action.
“We've decided that the best thing to do is to end the Kickstarter,” he wrote in an update. “We sincerely appreciate all of the support we got from the backers and the Kickstarter community.
“This was our first Kickstarter and we made mistakes along the way. I want to acknowledge that right up front. We put a lot of time and effort into the Kickstarter, but it's obvious missing things like physical goods hampered our efforts.
“It's also fair to say because we're early that we didn't have enough gameplay to show the game off enough to get people over the hump.”
Work will continue on Hero’s Song thanks to backing from investors, although Smedley stresses that the studio has managed to keep the project on track “without having to take money from publishers – something that was of key importance to us so that we could remain in creative control”.
John Smedley joined Pixelmage Games after leaving Daybeak, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, back in August. His departure followed a public dispute with convicted hacker Julius Kivimaki.
