Lumberyard adds GPU-simulated particles, GridMate Gem and mobile process management

Amazon has updated its Lumberyard engine with a number of new visual, networking and mobile features.

Among the headline changes is new support for GPU-simulated particles in Lumberyard’s particle editor, as well as the ability for the FBX importer to convert FBX units to metres and read up-axis orientation data. In addition, 2D animations can be created in the UI editor using key frames and curves.

On the networking side of things, the GridMate Gem has been introduced, allowing devs to set up multiplayer lobbies using the Lumberyard Flow Graph, rather than coding with C++. Additional multiplayer features can be added using the Component Entity System, new to this release. The GridMate API itself has been integrated with Amazon’s GameLift service, meaning EC2 instances can be reused.

Mobile is a big focal point for the update, bringing with it support for new Android devices such as the Samsung Note 5 and Motorola Nexus 6. The GMEM rendering path on iOS has been improved to support PC-like techniques such as vegetation, flares, flow and colour grading.

Lumberyard 1.2 also lets mobile devs manage process life on smartphones and tablets, meaning OS notifications such as low battery life and incoming calls can be handled with greater ease.
