Former Lionhead developer now a core member of Marmalade Game Studio

Marmalade hires Mark Backler as lead designer

Mark Backler has been hired as lead game designer at Marmalade Game Studio, the new in-house games division of the SDK maker.

He will work across a variety of different IPs for the software company, both in-house and external projects.

“It’s great to be making the move to mobile development,” Backler told Develop.

“I’m really enjoying the fast pace and new challenges that it presents. The company is at a really exciting time. We’re just starting to get a lot of great press. The Marmalade SDK is taking off, we have just released our first own IP title, Signal to the Stars, and I’m really looking forward to us following that up with more exciting original IP.”

Mark previously worked at Lionhead in a variety of roles on titles including Fable II, Milo and Kate and Fable: The Journey. His career has also seen him taking positions at Kuju Nik Nak and at EA, as a level integrator working on the Harry Potter series.

As well as this, Backler was one of the winners of the first ever JournoDevSwap last summer.

Marmalade creative director Mike Barwise added: “Mark joins us at an exciting time for Marmalade Game Studios – we have several exciting games to build and his thorough approach to design will help us execute these to maximum quality.”

Marmalade Game Studio released Signal to the Stars across four app stores last month.
