Developers can now use the Marmalade Platform to create games and apps for the Apple TV.

The latest open beta for Marmalade’s eponymous engine has been updated with tvOS compatibility – the operating system at the heart of Apple’s media streaming and gaming box.

Apple recently made a greater push for developers to move onto the Apple TV platform, adding a dedicated App Store and updating the hardware with new controls and support for games.

Marmalade supports features specific to tvOS, such as the Apple TV Remote, Game Centre integration and in-app purchases.

“We were able to leverage zero conf networking support, provided as standard with the Marmalade Platform, to implement local multiplayer and capitalise on the social aspect of big screen games,” said Cristina Mereuta, executive producer at Marmalade Game Studio, which released its first title for tvOS earlier this year.

“Also, using a common cross-platform technology across both tvOS and a companion iOS app functioning as a second controller really helped to speed up development.”
