Starship Group headed up and funded by Evolution and BigBig founder Martin Kenwright

Martin Kenwright recruits Motorstorm, PGR and Wipeout devs for new studio

A new UK development studio has been set up by a team that has previously worked on the Motorstorm, Project Gotham Racing and Wipeout series.

Named Starship Group, the firm is being funded by Martin Kenwright, the founder of Motorstorm creator Evolution Studios and BigBig Studios, the firm behind Vita launch title Little Deviants.

The studio is dedicated to "developing major cross-platform next-gen IP incorporating intelligent communications platforms", according to VG247, and is expected to reveal more about what it is working on at E3 2014.

Starship Group will be based in Liverpool and is also staffed by Motorstorm brand director Paul Hollywood, former Psygnosis exec Clemens Wangerin and Sony Liverpool’s Mike Humphreys.

Kenwright sold both Evolution and BigBig to Sony in 2007, and departed from the studio. Starship Group marks his return to games development.

"I was never going to return to the industry to do something that people expected," said Kenwright. "I had five years away from making games, during which I came to the conclusion that gaming investment is broken and because of that, real innovation seems to have taken a backseat.

"The concept for Starship takes our triple-A softology and wraps it around the antidote. The content that we’re working on now breaks new ground in a multitude of ways; in concept, in our approach to its creation, in how it’s funded, right through to how it’s marketed.

"Work on a number of genuinely game-changing products is already underway and we’ll be in a position to unveil the first as we get closer to summer."
