Microsoft have announced their acquisition of 3D data-optimization outfit Simplygon, a move that they say will accelerate their 3D For Everyone strategy that they outlined at their event in New York in 2015.

Simplygon was founded in 2006, with the aim of becoming the premier developer of automatic 3D data-optimization solutions. Much of their work is focused on helping creators and users of 3D data across various industries automate and optimise their output. This certainly fits with Microsoft's desire to push out more 3D content, and could be seen as a big step for the company as they move towards.

The leadership team will be remaining with the company, comprising of CEO Matt Connors, founder and CTO Ulrik Lindahl and the company's co-founder Koshi Hamedi.

Microsoft have been making waves in 3D recently, with the recent release of Paint 3D, a recent Windows 10 Creators Update and the creation of an online creator community at Remix3D.com. This acquisition is a testament to Microsoft's feelings in the area of 3D, although we'll likely see more information in the next few weeks.
