Moshi Monsters outfit launches new research and development studio Candy Labs

Mind Candy acquires Origami Blue

Mind Candy has made its first acquisition as the company looks to expand by purchasing Brighton-based developer Origami Blue.

Set up by ex Black Rock studios execs Edd Smith, Mark Knowles-Lee and James Ovnik, Origami Blue will now become part of Mind Candy’s new innovation centre Candy Labs.

Candy Labs will be a research and development studio to experiment with new ideas, which will be a mix of digital and non-digital projects.

The Moshi Monsters outfit also revealed that some of these new concepts would be acquired from third parties.

“We clicked creatively with the Origami Blue guys from the outset and are hugely excited to bring them onboard,” said Mind Candy CEO Michael Acton Smith.

“Developing new IP has always been part of the plan to expand Mind Candy. We have lots of ideas bubbling away and can’t wait to see the new visions come to life.”

Origami Blue’s Mark Knowles-Lee added: “Joining Mind Candy to help build the foundation for Candy Labs is incredibly enticing as it will allow us to focus purely on what we love – creating quality, playful innovation for future generations!”

Origami Blue has previously worked on augmented reality gaming applications as well as tough typing systems for children.
