New DICE action game shuns internal tech for Epic's engine

Mirrors Edge (free) running on UE3

Forthcoming free-running action game Mirror’s Edge, developed by EA’s DICE team, is running on Unreal Engine 3 according to Joystiq.

DICE has its own internal engine, called Frostbite, which powers Battlefield: Bad Company and doubtless future titles. According to an EA spokesperson, at the time of the project’s commencement the Frostbite engine was still in development and was "very closely supporting the Battlefield Bad Company team."

"Because of this we made the decision to develop on Unreal technology," said the representative. "In addition, because we have a very unique art-style in the game we have been developing a new lighting solution that truly makes Mirror’s Edge stand-out visually."

The game is set for a release this year on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
