MonoGame breaks ties with XNA Framework

Developers can now fully build their games on Windows, Mac and Linux

The XNA Framework is no longer required to use free open source game development tool MonoGame.

The engine was originally built upon the XNA 4 Framework, which Microsoft abandoned in 2013. Following its latest 3.3 update, the tool has now broken its ties to the framework and stands alone as its own engine.

The news means MonoGame developers can now fully develop their games on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, MacOS (using MonoDevelop) and Linux. A Windows Host is not required when building on alternative platforms.

Other supported platforms include Android, iOS 64-bit, Ouya and most consoles.

Games developed using MonoGame include Towerfall Ascension, Transistor (pictured) and Mercenary Kings.
