Ustwo's acclaimed puzzler named best iPad game, while Sirvo number puzzler tops iPhone list

Monument Valley and Threes! win Apple games of the year awards

Apple has named the best games of 2014, with two indie titles taking the top prizes.

Monument Valley, the surreal architectural puzzle game by UK studio Ustwo, was named best iPad game of the year. Meanwhile Threes!, a number puzzle game by indie team Sirvo, was award best iPhone game of 2014.

Apple described Monument Valley as "an enchanting blend of Escher-inspired perspective puzzles and beautiful minimalist style" that "wows at every turn… [and] left us in perpetual state of awe", according to Polygon.

Of Sirvo’s title, the firm said "Immensely thoughful design makes Threes! instantly appealing and nearly impossible to put down".

Ustwo wrote about its victory on its official blog: "Thank you to Apple for this tremenous honour. It’s been a fantastic year for mobile games."

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft was named runner-up for the iPad category, accompanied by Leo’s Fortune for iPhone.
